A quiet thank-you to Ricky Gervais, who has never once made his generosity about the applause. As the official “Guardian” of Derek, a moon bear rescued from the bile trade, and the source of extraordinary gifts to Animals Asia — £427,000 split among rescue partners in 2022, and close to £2.5 million more from his Mortality tour proceeds — Mr. Gervais has spent years putting real, sustained money behind the fight to end bear bile farming in Vietnam and China.

Funny thing about this work: you learn pretty quickly that the flashiest donors are rarely the steadiest ones. So there’s something particularly satisfying about watching Ricky just… keep showing up, tour after tour, without needing anyone to clap. Consider this post me clapping anyway.

Advocacy is easy in the moment and hard in the follow-through. His hasn’t wavered. Thank you, Ricky — from one small corner of this fight to a very large one.
